Our cows work for us.
This is our livelihood. It’s a lifestyle and a remarkable way to raise a family.
It’s also a business.
With the objective of making money.
Our first heifer to calve this year didn’t take her calf. Worse than simply walking away and not taking it, she beat it.
That heifer earned a one way ticket on the first ride to the Big Mac pen.
In order for a cow to be bred here again, they must raise a calf. No exceptions.
The cost to carry a cow a year without her producing a calf is too great to overcome. There isn’t enough margin for us to absorb it.
On a purely economic level it’s a simple decision here.
We’ll finish the culls then reinvest that money.
